Kanna Aoki finds inspiration through shapes and color in the everyday world around her and paints to convey the beauty that can be found in the mundane. Working from her studio in the San Francisco Bay Area, she draws from her experiences and observations of the world, bringing places and form to life with the expressiveness of her brushstrokes and her gently vibrant use of color.

"Both the rural and urban landscape reveal remnants of the past and ironies of the present providing a framework for exploring solitude, light, and grace. I am intrigued by the way people interact with -- or detach themselves from -- one another and their environment. The figures in my work are often ambiguous and remote, set in a moment in time, their thoughts and emotions left open to interpretation."

“I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn't say any other way... things I had no words for.”
